Deerhound The Adorable Dog Breed
The Deerhound is the oldest dog breed in Scotland. The old writings of the early Middle Ages already mentioned the large andslender dogs, whose exact pedigree is still unknown. While one theory assumes that the deerhound is a direct descendant of the wolf, there is a second that early Celtic greyhounds name as ancestors of this breed. In any case, the Deerhound is a very old breed of dog, the roots of which go far into the past.
According to its name, the Deerhound was used particularly frequently during the hunt for red deer. The Scottish royalty, however, also recognized his sensitive and friendly nature and kept the Deerhound as a loyal companion dog. In addition, this dog breed was also the gentle Irish Wolfhound . As firearms became more popular when hunting, the use of the deerhound shifted and it was increasingly used as a companion dog. Nevertheless, many representatives of this breed came to the hunt. In 1886, the year in which the British Deerhound Club was founded, the breed standard still applies today. The FCI also officially recognizes the Deerhound and leads it in Group 10, Section 2 under standard number 164. You may like our best low maintenance dog breeds (small, medium, large)
